Landscapers often apply chemicals to lawns at more than double the concentrations used in industrial agriculture. Edwina von Gal, a landscape architect, has a vision of a new lawn to match the changing times. The shift from the traditional buzzcut carpet of grass is a change in fashion that von Gal compares to burning the bra.

I was brought up to believe that all crawly creatures were something to be despised and, immediately upon sighting, KILLED. I had no idea that these terrible, loathsome bugs were necessary for not only human life but all life, nor about their vital inter-connection with soil renewal. In my teens when I started spending time in untouched nature I began to feel an unexpected connection which evoked a deep sense of calm mixed with kinship. These manicured English lawns, originally exported from a small humid island nation to this country, still populate all sorts of U. Fortunately, lawns are slowly falling out of favor as people are slowly realizing the amount of care and water lawns take is antithetic to their natural environment.

When a landscape designer on a mission to save the Earth met a pair of local filmmakers who shared her vision, it was a match made in compost. East Hampton—based landscape designer Edwina von Gal who has done the gardens of Calvin Klein, Ina Garten, and artist Cindy Sherman, to name a few created the PRFCT Earth Project, a mission to encourage homeowners and landscapers to take a natural, toxin-free approach to their yards and gardens.

Her naturalist philosophy makes for an excellent metaphor for our movement. So I said, okay, and I found a supply closet that was large enough to put a desk inside. But my address was Park Avenue. Instead she built a nonprofit committed to promoting toxin-free lawns and landscapes. The philanthropist Mrs. William Rayner known as Kathy; her late husband was the noted watercolorist and travel writer Bill has a little place on the ocean in East Hampton called Woody House. The property, acquired in the mids after the Rayners had rented it from the Trippe family for years, is fabled for many reasons, but most notably for the view. It occupies the end of a spit of land with the ocean on one side and Georgica Pond on the other—all water and sky, and no better place exists to appreciate the changing light and weather of the South Fork. There are other great gardens out there but mine was against all odds. These have grown into a series of lush outdoor rooms, romantic and dense. Kathy has also been on the front lines of pesticide-free organic gardening on the East End, and, like landscape designer and Hamptons neighbor Edwina von Gal, she was green before green was cool.
